Shining Stars Montessori PCS Achieves Prestigious American Montessori Society Accreditation
SSMA is the only public Montessori school in Washington, DC to achieve the designation
School leaders at Shining Stars Montessori Academy PCS (SSMA) learned on Monday, February 29th that the school had passed the American Montessori Society’s (AMS) rigorous accreditation process and is now designated as an AMS-accredited Montessori School.
SSMA is the only public Montessori school in Washington, DC to have earned this distinction.
Montessori education is recognized throughout the world as a highly effective method for producing independent, innovative thinkers and creators, such as the founders of Microsoft, Google and Facebook, to name a few. Many of the world’s leaders including Great Britain’s Royal Family send their children to Montessori schools, which have historically been exclusive, private schools since 1907, when the first Montessori school opened in Italy. Washington, DC’s public Montessori schools have remained in high demand since the first one opened a little more than 15 years ago.
“We have been determined to stay true to authentic Montessori practices, and have ensured that all of our guides [teachers] are Montessori-certified,” said Regina Rodriguez, SSMA’s Executive Director. “Our children are thriving, our staff are passionate about their work, and our parents are happily engaged. AMS accreditation is icing on the cake,” she added.

The AMS Accreditation Process
The American Montessori Society is the leading advocate for quality Montessori education and sets the professional standards for the practice. The rigorous AMS accreditation process takes one to two years to complete. It involves an intensive self study which engages the entire school community, and includes the evaluation and documentation of the school’s governance, curriculum, fiscal and personnel policies, teacher preparation, learner outcomes, health and safety practices and facilities. It also includes an AMS peer team visit, which evaluates if the school meets AMS standards for authentic Montessori educational practice in classrooms. The team identifies the school’s strengths and areas for improvement and provides recommendations that may be incorporated in the school’s required strategic plan. AMS accredited schools are required to maintain AMS standards, remain on a path of continuous improvement and provide annual reports detailing their progress to the AMS.
